By Kim Kent

as in grown in mud pies and dandelion settled
or the chicken preferred unplucked, the smell
of a more particular meat. as in mind
or forth like the place he stood afraid
to play with daffodils. where the days
are too cluttered even for mud.
as in action taken or attention brought;
whichever sets softer  the smell
of earth on naked flesh.  the flowers she plucked
were lamppost large and smelled like the sea;
they were both enormous and erroneous
and not a thing less.

she readied herself for the battle’s reciprocal
and the sun shone everywhere skin grew.
